Late Bloomers

It’s Autumn 2025, and we’re thrilled to present Field Notes 68th quarterly edition, “Fall Flowers,” celebrating three common late-season blooms that don’t get the hype they deserve.

Spring flowers get all the press, but the purple coneflower, false foxglove, and common chicory are all still here for us when the days get shorter and colder. Jennifer Farrell of Starshaped Press draws the trio in the decorative style of early-20th-century “publishers’ bindings” and her charming illustrations couldn’t have pleased us more.

To emulate the texture and finish of dusty, well-worn cloth books from more than a hundred years ago, Field Notes printed the covers with three subtle metallic inks on Mohawk’s new “Midnight Blue” 100#C Mosaic stock with a “burlap” finish. The inside back covers features a bit of data about each flower, plus a scaled-down list of Practical Applications. The bodies are ruled in light blue-gray, on our ever-popular 60#T Domtar Lynx stock.

02. Cover: Mohawk Mosaic 100# C “Midnight Blue” in Burlap, with a thick, brute force application of “Coneflower Mauve” and “Deep Denim” soy-based Superior inks.
03. Innards: Domtar Lynx Opaque 60#T “White,” with a fine, 1-color application of “Autumn Sky” soy-based Superior ink.
04. Cover and innards printed on a Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102S six-color printing press.
05. Bound with a Muller Martini 6-pocket saddle stitcher with cover feeder/scorer, with appreciation to Samuel Slocum, George W. McGill, and William J. Brown, the “Founding Fathers of the Staple.”
06. Corners precisely rounded to a 3/8″ (9.5mm) radius with a Challenge DCM double round-corner machine.
07. Ruled lines: 1/4″ (6.4mm).
08. Memo book dimensions are 3-1/2″ × 5-1/2″ (89mm × 140mm).
09. FIELD NOTES uses only the Futura typeface family (Paul Renner, 1927), in collaboration with Monotype.
